Why do people wear red and set off fireworks and firecrackers at Chinese New Year? What next? Each chapter is illustrated and links are given to internet sites that provide more information. The book is written to give children an overview of this important Chinese festival that is celebrated around the world. The descriptions of what happens on the traditional fifteen days is intended to make children aware of the history of the festival and also that as the world changes, so do some of the traditional activities.Likewise the description of traditional Chinese New Year customs offers a historical perspective that may be a starting point for school projects. The web links are intended to encourage children to explore the topics further. The chapter on the Chinese Zodiac gives a simple overview of the animals in the Zodiac, their position in the cycle and introduces the idea that each animal has its own special personality traits.
